I must be honest, I am not as much a bird person as a cat and dog person, so my views are not necessarily completely objective. I find birds much harder to communicate with than cats or dogs, which is why I feel that we are not the world's best bird parents.

Budgies are low-cost, low maintenance pets. They are sweet and loving, and they are definitely better paired. Before Lila and Blaauw became a pair, Blaauw's previous two mates, Hanzi and Turka, suddenly died. We got him a new mate in the form of Lila. The first few days there was very little chirping, but then eventually they got to like each other.

Lila still becomes frantic when you lean into the cage to replace the cuttlefish bone or something else, so I don't think they're all that fond of us. But I make sure they are fed each day, and I always say "hello" in the morning and "sleep tight" at night. Whereas cats and dogs are naturally able to communicate with humans, I feel more of a gap with birds - and yet I have seen friends who have amazing relationships with their birds.

I will always love my children, avian, canine or feline - but I wish you could just pick a budgie up and hug it - in our case you can't. And that's okay! We love them all the same...
