George the Budgie

George was the first budgie I owned by myself - my parents had had a few budgies when I was growing up. George didn't live very long when I owned him, about 7 or 8 months. I'm not sure how he got sick or what the cause of his death was - it could be because we were living in a basement apartment. I took him to the vet when he got sick but he passed while he was there.

To be honest, I was kind of scared of him at first, only because I didn't want him to bite me. I did try some training with him (step up) and he sort of got it but I wonder if it's because he was getting sick and so was less resistant. I would let him out of his cage and he'd sit around the apartment and it was easy enough to get him back in his cage when it was time to do so. He never really learned any other tricks, I don't think I had him long enough to teach him much, especially because he seemed unwell for a bit but I didn't realize it until it was too late. If your bird is hanging around the bottom of his cage rather than gripping on to a bar up above, he's probably not feeling well.

He was easy to maintain, just make sure he had a clean cage and fresh water and food. Bird cages are very easy to clean when they have the removable bottoms. I would definitely own a budgie again!
