Our parakeet started out in my sister's room and she was rather angry towards everyone that tried to do anything with her. After she moved to the kitchen and was around my mom when she made meals, she had a new outlook on life. She would often vocalize, move back and forth along her perch as if she was "dancing" to music, and she was very sociable with all of the family. She was very easy to clean--just a change of the newspaper at the bottom of the cage, and we often changed and added perches and new toys for her. She loved a bell that she could ring and a toy parakeet that she thought was real and often talked to. Her food and toys were cheap, so they're a good starter pet for children. Just make sure that they either have a friend or are in a high traffic area so they can enjoy other's company.
