I have owned a range of pets over the years, from cats and dogs, to birds and rabbits. When I was about 9 years old, my parents took my to a pet store to get a new pet for my birthday. I was so excited and had no idea before I went into the store what animal I was going to walk out with. I looked around at all the different animals but I kept being drawn back to the budgerigar's. They had these think black stripes lined across their little lime green heads, some had more than others, which I later discovered determines there age. I went home that day with a little budgerigar that I named Jojo, and he was perfect. He loved attention, especially when you sang to him, and as long as you respected his personal space he was always in the mood to play. Jojo was so full of energy, and such a kind loving bird but unfortunately he didn't get off to the best start with his health. Being from a pet store, he was slightly malnourished when we brought him home, and his feathers were a little tattered in some spots where it looked like he'd gotten nicked by another bird. There are great pet stores out there that do an excellent job of taking care of their animals, but there are also a lot of places which don't really care about the animals health all too much. It is really quite sad, but all we can do is adopt one of those animals and give them the best which they deserve. Birds do make a great companion, but they are far different from any other pet out there. You can not cuddle a bird the same way as you would a Cat, or play with it the same way you would a Gerbil. I would recommend a budgerigar to anyone with a big heart, spare time on their hands, a safe environment, and a passion for birds.
