I received a parakeet for my 10th birthday from my grandmother along with a parakeet book. I read the book cover to cover and tried to learn everything I could about my new pet. I wanted to teach him how to perch on my finger but the learning curve between both of us was fairly steep. He bit and pinched my fingers several times but I refused to give up and once he figured out what I was after, it was smooth sailing from there. He perched on fingers and on shoulders and enjoyed free flight around a room in our house, though the droppings he occasionally left behind were not appreciated by my mother. He was a fairly quiet bird but he enjoyed making noise with a little bell toy in his cage. He was personable and easy to care for and fell madly in love with his reflection in a small cage mirror. It was enjoyable to watch him bob and weave and dance for his reflection. He learned only a few small tricks with me, but he was a fun pet for several years. Apologies for the poor picture quality, but my 10 year old photography skills were extremely poor!
