Beautiful, Lovely - Not My Cup of Tea

To be honest with you, my mother liked parakeets more than I did. She named every parakeet we ever had Petey. I do not know why.

I've never had one as an adult, never felt inclined to get one. This is not to say I don't like them - quite the contrary! I have friends who have them and I can sit mesmerized by parakeets for hours at a time. Most of the ones I've known have been interactive, personable, intelligent, and gentle. I enjoy listening to their songs and chatter, watching them as they size up their environment, letting them perch on my finger and walk around on my shoulder.

So - why have I chosen to not have one as a companion? In a nutshell - I'm overly sensitive to noises. It's just that simple.

I believe parakeets are excellent pets for some people. While I enjoy their songs very much I don't want to listen to them all the time. For me listening to their constant chirping would transform a symphony into a cacophony.

I would not say that parakeets are necessarily "high maintenance" but they do require attention. If not cared for properly they can become quite fragile and despondent. Don't be discouraged from getting one - just do your homework and research them before you bring one into your home.
