Budgerigar - The best first time bird for kids and adults alike!

The Budgerigar is absolutely the BEST starter bird for anyone over the age of 6! All of my kids, from an early age have all successfully had Budgies!

They come in a world of colors and patterns, are inexpensive to acquire, inexpensive and easy to maintain, and are enormously social and vocal. If you get your Budgerigar or Parakeet (as they are more commonly known) at an early age, they can easily be trained to come to you, sit on your shoulder, talk and more! Being a very social bird, they do not tolerate being in a quite dead house and really prefer activity and lots of noise. A single Budgie should be handled, played with, and engaged daily. If you can’t provider that all the time, then get two, three, or more Budgies in a suitably large cage and they will be happy. Otherwise, they get sullen and start to develop emotional problems and start biting you and plucking their own feathers.

The Budgerigar is a low maintenance bird that doesn't have any bizarre diet or environment requirements and is docile, playful and lovable. What more could you want from a first time bird? My kids and I have had dozens over the years and have done very well with all of them.
