Budgies are a good first pet for families and children to learn about the responsibilities and rewards of adopting a new furry or in this case feathered member of the family.
My daughters named our budgies, Birdy and Annabelle and have grown very attached to them both. Our budgies are not terribly affectionate or friendly, in fact giving one a pat can result in some very vicious nipping and flapping of wings. But that's okay because they are very friendly and affectionate with each other.
They are very loud early in the morning. Squawking and flapping and playing with so much energy. And it is sweet seeing them sleeping, pressed together, side by side, and so peaceful.
We are the strange giants who bring food and clean their home. As long as we don't try to touch or pat them they are quite happy to accept the food and maid service.
Budgies are fun to watch as they play and chatter to one another and they are easy to feed and clean up after. I honestly think they are a good pet to help teach children the responsibility of feeding and cleaning and generally caring for another living creature.
