I had a bit of a traumatizing experience with a bird as a small child and thought perhaps to get a parakeet to heal the broken trust. I'd heard that parakeets were very friendly, clever, and sweet.. so I went very excited to the pet store to welcome a new member into my family. Perhaps I went to the wrong store, perhaps it's best to go to a breeder, I'm not sure. But as cute as Poppy was, he wasn't friendly or sweet. He was entirely white with a blue belly and very playful when in his cage, but whenever I let him out or tried to handfeed him in his cage he became very anxious and aggresive. He lived about four years.. which is within the average, but still not very long. Some of my friends have successfully found the right parakeet for them, but still a good handful haven't. I'd recommend getting to handle and know the bird before just choosing the prettiest one and taking it home. You also have to clean the cage pretty often- so that's something to take into account as well.

Good luck finding the perfect pet for you!
