Budgies can be a full time job

Budgies are perfect for first time bird owners. I had a budgie for about 2 years and it was very cheerful but also demanding. My budgie was a lovely blue colour with grey spots, very easy on the eyes. It was very small and did not need a large cage or too much space. It slept through most of the night but did wake up early in the mornings and chirped throughout much of the daytime. The chirp is not extremely loud but it is persistent. It was relatively easy to care for, ate the seeds I provided and enjoyed the perches and toys I added in the cage. It was very smart and if you have the time, they can be taught to do many tricks.

I found my budgie to be more work than it was worth. Like most other animals, they require a lot of care and grooming. I was not prepared for the extent of grooming my budgie would need. I had to clip it's nails every couple weeks which was quite the process and must be done extremely carefully. I also needed to bathe my budgie every couple of weeks. I first tried to bathe it in a small bowl, but it preferred to sit under a lightly running faucet. My budgie always picked it's feathers and threw it's food, thus leaving the cage and surrounding area covered with blue feathers and seeds!

Budgies are a great choice for a pet bird if you are prepared for the work that comes with them. If you are a smoker, you should be aware that these birds are very sensitive to smoke and should not be in a smoking home. They can live for a while if taken care of properly. Unfortunately, I had a friend caring for my pets while I was on vacation and she accidentally let the bird fly away.
