The often overlooked budgie (or incorrectly named parakeet) these little guys are toted as being beginner, throwaway birds. Not true! Budgies are incredible pets. They have a great intelligence and a massive vocal ability. Although their voices are small and quick they can speak very well if you listen closely. Playful and loving birds they are also inquisitive and independent. Wrecking havoc on your desk, fighting your pens and paper, or chirping in your ear they make for great companions. My favourite budgie could speak a variety of phrases and when I called his name he would fly to me. He loved to eat off of my plate and drink from my water. He also possessed no fear of strangers and flew over to them to say 'hi.'
They are not that easy to train though, their small size makes them wary of people so I recommend nixing the pet store budgie and going to a reputable hand fed breeder if you want a tame bird. Otherwise taming a pet store one can take months to a year. Budgies are receptive and intuitive and can be taught to fly to you on command, simple tricks, and speaking.
Diet is fairly simple, feed them mostly pellets and some fresh fruits and leaves. Avoid seed diets as they will cause fatty liver disease! I also recommend male budgies only as the females tend to be less vocal and outgoing, they are broody and do not often make for good pets.
