My budgie was adopted in a family with younger children and experienced-bird handler adults alike. This bird was the perfect mix for smaller children but still a fun addition to the family.
Parakeets are generally friendly and lovely looking birds. On the off occasion, a stranger would be in the house, and our bird would get more aggressive than normal. Biting and nicking at an exposed strange finger in their cage would be met with a quick "ow". But on a normal day, our birds were even-tempered and happy talkers.
On another note, these birds didn't have the most beautiful singing voices ever, but usually responded with chattering and talking to the house and the rest of the family. These talkative birds were soon a normal sound in our house, even if it meant a month or two of being surprised by the almost constant chatter.
All in all, my budgie was a great starter pet and friend, if you can stand a little chatter for awhile. He was a bright and fun companion to the family.
