Pete was a Budgerigar (we called him a Parakeet) for over 15 years.
He was very friendly and was trained to say a few words and would interact with family members and friends.
When Pete was about 3, I thought it would be a great idea to purchase a female Budgie as a companion for him. He loved his new friend at first sight!!
However, he no longer would talk or interact with humans. He had no interest in human contact for the rest of his life. He was not aggressive with people; he only wanted to be left alone with his sweetheart.
His companion died after many years and Pete refused to eat.
I would say if you don't have much time, two birds would be a good decision. But, if you want the bird to talk and interact, one bird will be enough
