Acquired: Pet store

The best tip I can give when buying a bird is to get them at an official breeder and not the pet store. Sure the pet store bought one might be cheaper but you do not know its origin! Breeders know the exact age of the bird you purchase and if there are any diseases the species might be sensitive too. I got my bird at a pet store and it got really sick shortly after I bought him and he died within 4 months.
Parakeets can be quit noisy and the cage needs to be cleaned daily in order not to get a smell inside (if you keep them inside that is). Because children can be overenthusiastic it might not be a good idea to let them handle the bird. They can squeeze to tight and the bird might peck them.
During the short period I had Pietje I found that I am not a bird person. The noise and lack of social interaction just wasn't for me.
