The Common Parakeet

I know there’s a fair few reviews on Parakeets, but they really do make the perfect first bird to own. They’re incredibly easy to care for and train. We had ours, Tweety, trained to perch on our fingers, step up, fly back to the cage when he needed to do its business and safely fly and perch on our curtain rods. He also joined us at the dinner table, drank from out water glasses and nibbled at our salads, it was entertaining, he had excellent table manners for a bird.
During the cold winters, we kept him cozy by keeping him in a warm (70 degrees) draft-free room. Budgerigar like their cage to be covered at night, as well. If you keep their cage clean, their water fresh and spend a little time daily with them, you'll keep them very happy. Since Tweety was a male, he was better at mimicking than our females. He was affection, easy to please and to care for. A great first pet for a child.
