Soon after our second hamster passed on (and we got a kitten instead) an elderly relative died and left her budgie homeless, so we took her on. Snowy was, not surprisingly, white all over and very friendly, even coming out into the lounge for a while in the evenings, and although we kept a *very* close eye on the kitten/cat during these sessions, he never showed much interest in her at all.
She was happy with her commercial birdseed mix and since cleaning involved just changing the sheet on the bottom of the cage and occasionally wiping down the perches etc I don't believe it was too onerous (of course, being about nine at the time, mum actually did it all ...). She lived quite happily with us for a couple of years before crossing the rainbow bridge; after all, she was already a mature girl when she joined us. I did enjoy her company, but I had already discovered cats and they were the real animal loves of my life!
