I've had the pleasure of caring for three parakeets in the last 5 years. These little guys have been the best pets I've ever had. They're cute, cuddly, and very sociable. In just one month, each of my birds would step up, accept food from my hand, and wouldn't bite when I put my hands near them. On the rare occasions where they would bite, it'd be softly and more defensive than aggressive. These birds are extremely low maintenance and don't require more than an hour outside the cage a day to be perfectly content. It's preferable that they be bought with a companion, because they can become lonely if you don't have too much time for them and it can lead to feather-plucking, screeching, and other undesirable habits in your bird. But overall, owning parakeets is a fun and rewarding experience for any bird enthusiast and is a great pet to start with.
