Bloomer - The Invincible Parakeet

Bloomer was a pretty typical parakeet in most respects. We got him at the pet store one day for my little sister, who had wanted another pet besides the family dog.

Parakeets are pretty easy to take care of, and fairly low cost to own. They are pleasant to have around, and do seem to interact with you which makes them more fun than a fish or similar animal.

What makes Bloomer special is something horrible that happened to him one day. Our dog, a small Lhasa Apso named Muffin, had desperately wanted to sink her teeth into Bloomer ever since we got him. She would sit and beg at his cage as if he were a reward/treat every time she would return from going out.

Unfortunately for Bloomer, one day she did get him. She actually ripped a hole in his body, right under his wing. We took Bloomer to the vet who said that there really wasn't anything he could do, but he didn't look as if he was in terrible pain so we just put some Neosporin on him and hoped for the best. The little bugger would go on to fully recover and end up living an exceptionally long life after that.

Good for Bloomer.
