Budgies or parakeets are beautiful birds with impressive vocal qualities. I kept mine for several years in a big cage with a bunch of finches and it learned each of the finches respective songs. It would sing them constantly, talking to the other birds, with the occasional parrot squawks thrown in so you knew which was which. Supposedly parakeets are not to be kept with smaller birds because they will fight, but I never had any problems and they all seemed to get along just fine. The finches even seemed to outlive the parakeets by several years.

Parakeets can also be a good choice as a trainable bird, though I never really made the effort to train them. I am not sure if they can be trained to speak or not, but judging by their ability to mimic other birds, it seems possible.

They can be, however, quite loud, so if that is a problem then this is not the pet for you. Overall, they are low-maintenance pets (like most birds) and don't require much physical effort, though they may take a toll on your sanity after a while!
