A safe bet for bird lovers

Another of my fond childhood memories is of Richie, our boy budgie - who incidentally turned out to be a girl.
Richie was originally our class mascot at primary (elementary) school, but when the teacher left the school Ritchie went up for grabs. I guess the new teacher didn't like the idea of having a bird disrupting classes. I was the lucky boy who brought Richie home, and he immediately became a central point to our family. There were 2 main reasons behind this.
1. He took pride of place in our lounge, and would provide enthusiastic chips early in the morning while we stumbled around making our breakfasts.
2. His stand-offs with our cat (at the time) Sheba were entertaining. (Apart from the time that the cage was completely knocked over.)
All in all, Richie was a simple low maintenance pet. Budgies are easy pets to look after, and easy to feed. If your kids beg you for a pet, a budgie is a safe bet.
