My love affair with parakeets

As a child, my great uncle had 2 parakeets that could whistle and say a few phrases. This was my first experience with this kind of bird and I thought they were the neatest things. I used to sit for hours with these birds when we would go visit my uncle.
When I was a older, 10 or so, I was at a pet store and talked my parents into letting me buy a pair of parakeets with my own money. I talked to Holly and Misty all the time, repeating "hello" over and over to them, in hopes they would say it back. They never did talk, but I did not think they were any less cool for it.
They were not hard to take care of. I cleaned their cage daily. I also gave them fresh water and feed daily. They were a bit messy though. Every time they flew in the cage, seeds and feathers went everywhere. Nothing a bit of sweeping could not take care of.
I do recommend this bird as a pet, even for children. They are fun to watch and interact with. They sing and, if your lucky, they may even talk.
