Parakeet (Budgerigar) Pros & Cons

If you are looking for a fun loving bird that is on quieter side, Parakeets make amazing little pets! They can be trained very easily, can talk & mimic sounds & take up little room. They also live 10 to 20 years! They make great pets for beginners as well as breeders.

Pros:
Very attractive colors
Small in size
Not as loud as other pet birds
Very smart, easy to train
Can learn to talk
Very friendly (when raised properly)
Very easy to breed
Great for kids
Easy to clean up after
Low cost in food

Cons:
Very fragile
Can become sick very easily from drafts
Harder to train in pairs
Skittish to human interaction at first (if not hand raised)

Bottom Line: Parakeets make amazingly wonderful pets. I got my first Parakeet when I was only 7 years old. I handled him daily, trained him myself & he loved the whole family. He never bit or was aggressive. He lived to be 11 years old & my mother fell in love with him & has had parakeets ever since! If you are looking for a bird to interact with, I recommend only getting one. When they are in pairs, they are harder to train & more skittish towards human interaction. If you devote just one hour of hands on interaction with one of these little guys, they will quickly become a loving member of the family! I always recommend getting any animals through specialized breeders over pet stores. When birds are raised & fed by human hand, it is amazing how different they act towards humans.
