We've had many budgies in the family when I was growing up. They are pretty inexpensive to buy from a pet shop, and things like cages, bird seed/millet spray, sanded sheets for the cage, cuttlefish bones for their diets etc. can also be cheaply bought.
They do 'tweet' quite a lot during the day (especially if they can hear other birds outside) and can often be relied upon to wake you up in the morning! On the occasions where I only had one budgie in the cage, the bird would have no problem talking to his/her self in the mirror all day long!
If you have the time and the patience, they can be trained to perform certain actions or tricks. For example, I taught one of my budgies to fly out of her cage and sit on my shoulder (like how you might see a pirate with a parrot on their shoulder!) and could easily walk around the house going into different rooms and she'd still be perched there, happy to go exploring with me!
They don't have a long lifespan unfortunately, but they do make nice pets and are great for kids too. Just don't let any cats enter your house...!
