I have grown up with a budgie in my life (although due to deceptive parents I have believed they have all lived a lot longer than I was aware) and they are truly wonderful pets. There is nothing more wonderful that listening to a chirping bird in your own home! I had one that was incredibly fond of his own voice, however a tea towel over the cage can calm them down if needed. Magic, the boy I currently own is getting on a big and definitely grumpy in his old age, which means he can definitely give the cats a run for their money when they try and take a snoop in his cage.
In terms of ease to own, they are effortless. They need their regular seed and fresh water, along with some millet for a treat and the odd grape here and there too. I would say they are suitable for all age, even children under 8, however a parent to supervise is definitely needed if handling to be involved and definitely during cleaning their cage out.
Things to consider before purchasing a budgie: Do you have a large cage for them to spread their wings and that is also safe from dangers? Some can live up to 10 years so can you commit to that kind of dedication? They can be noisy so can you accept that?
