The Mighty "Budgie"

My Parakeet was the first pet I owned as a little girl. I named her Sandy because I loved the movie "Grease." She was blue and white.

The budgie is a hardy little bird, I played with her quite a bit and she was a great friend. With my door closed tightly I would let her out to fly around my room. She often sat on top of my play kitchen while I "cooked" us up a meal. These birds are pretty smart and you can train them to do simple tricks. They have funny little personalities too which is probably why they are such a popular pet.

They can be very loud during the day, they chirp and sing a lot. However at night if you cover their cage they are silent and go to sleep. They are no low maintenance however as with any bird they make quite a mess and need to have their cage cleaned often. While time consuming, at least their care isn't too expensive.

They are a fairly good choice for a small child because they are easy to pick up and they are social, which makes them hold a child's interest longer and makes them more likely to want to help with their care and feeding.
