I had a blue budgerigar, or parakeet, and really enjoyed my time with it. My bird, Blueberry, was always friendly and fun to be around. He was also fairly low-maintenance. Usually the only maintenance that felt like a chore was vacuuming up feathers that would wind up outside his cage.
Overall, he was always healthy and had a great disposition. He was friendly and curious towards everyone. In fact, my sister took him with her to college to stave off homesickness, and he made great company.
I would suggest that if you have small children, it may be best to avoid getting a parakeet. They're quite small birds that require gentleness that a very young child may not understand.
