I got Meira from my brother, who bought her at a pet store. He bought two birds, a male and a female, but when you have more than one bird, they then to associate with each other and mostly ignore the human. He really wanted to train one of them, so I took the female.
By the time I got her, she was too old to be easily trained. As she had never been handled it took a lot of work to get her to learn to step up and be comfortable being held. I don't think I was hugely successful. She was mostly quiet, usually only vocalizing when other birds were outside or if there was an action movie on tv.
My girlfriend bought her own parakeet and starting working with him right away, and he was super friendly and loved being held. I think the key to parakeets is to get them young and handle them often.
