I had a blue parakeet (as these birds are coloquially known) as a teenager in high school. The bird was beautiful, if a bit loud, and was quite friendly towards my family. He would hop around on my arms and didn't take much upkeep. Overall, he was a delightful and inexpensive pet; probably a great choice for a middle-school aged child to have as a stepping stone towards a more difficult pet.

Sadly, the birds seem to be fairly fragile as far as pets go. In my teenage carelessness, I'd left a window open on a spring night. The temperature dipped below 70 degrees (to the high 60s) and the draft killed the bird. If you do purchase one of these, make sure to keep it in a draft-free area of the home, not near any windows!
