Blue Fronted Amazon

The Blue Fronted Amazon ("BF") is one of the better mimickers and talkers among Amazons, along with the Double Yellowhead and Yellow Nape Amazons. I find these birds to be less loud than the other amazons. There is a normal BF, smaller (12-14 inches) and a larger more colorful variety called the Choco-Blue Front. I've had both types and they exhibit the same traits.

From my experience, I have found the Blue Fronts to be easier to tame than the other amazons. These birds also go through the terrible twos that most amazons go through, but the BF is less nippy and aggressive in general in my opinion than the others. Not only are these birds great talkers but I had a lot of success with them in terms of training them to do tricks. They are quick learners and seem to enjoy doing tricks.

In terms of breeding, I found the BF easier to breed for some reason than the other birds. This is reflected in the somewhat lower price for the BF compared to the others. They are extremely popular with pet owners who have kept them as pets.

Drawbacks are that these birds, while quieter, can really scream loud if they want. My birds also appeared to be more territorial of their perch or cage and are not afraid to fend other birds off. And like many parrots, the BF can easily gain weight so their diet must be watched carefully.
