MY BLUE AND GOLD'S ARE SO LOVING. THEY ARE VERY ACTIVE AND THEY MUST BE KEPT BUSY. THEY, AT TIMES CAN BE VERY DEMANDING. THEY LOVE TO FEED THEIR LOVED ONES I.E. ME! THEY ALSO LOVE TO BE FEED VIA TAKING FOOD RIGHT OUT OF YOUR MOUTH. HA HA. THIS HOWEVER CAN BE DANGEROUS A LOT OF PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT IT IS TOO DANGEROUS TO LET A MACAW SIT ON YOUR SHOULDERS BECAUSE THEY ARE CAPABLE OF HURTING YOU. BUT, MINE DID NOT AND I TRUSTED THEM AS THEY TRUSTED ME. BUT, I DIDN'T JUST DO THIS OVER NIGHT WE HAD TO GET A GOOD SOLID BOND FIRST. I'VE FOUND THAT THERE MUST BE LIMITS FOR THEM AS WELL AS CHILDREN. IF YOU TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEM, FEED THEM THE RIGHT! FOODS, AND BATH THEM NOT ALL LIKE TO BE BATHED. LOL BUT, KEEP THEM OH SO BUSY WITH A LOT OF TOYS AND STIMULI. MINE LOVED TO LEARN TO TALK. AND MAKE ALL KINDS OF FUNNY NOISES AND THEY ALSO LIKE TO SCREAM AND WHEN I SAY SCREAM I DO MEAN THE NEIGHBORS COULD HEAR THIS. SO, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU MAY HAVE TO REALLY WORK ON. IT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT THEIR CAGES ARE CLEANED DAILY! I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. I GO WAY BACK TO MY GRANDMOTHER HAVING THEM AND BACK THEN AT NIGHT WE WOULD COVER THEIR HUGH CAGES WITH A SHEET OR A BIRD CAGE COVER. BECAUSE WE ALWAYS BELIEVED THIS WOULD CALM THEM DOWN AND MAKE THEM FEEL MORE SECURE AS WELL. SURE ENOUGH WE CONTINUED THIS COVERING UP AT NIGHT AND FOR THE MOST PART WORKED VERY WELL HOWEVER, WHEN ONE OF MY BIRDS DECIDED HE DIDN'T WANT TO GO TO BED AS HE STILL HAD TOO MUCH PLAY LEFT IN HIM HE WOULD GRAB THE SHEET AS WE TRIED TO COVER THIS HUGH CAGE WITH IT AND WOULD PULL IT INTO HIS CAGE AND HAVE HUGH HOLES INTO IT BEFORE WE COULD GET IT BACK FROM HIM/HER. IT WAS KIND OF A GAME HE WOULD PLAY ABOUT TWICE A WEEK. YOU DO NEED A LOT OF PATIENTCE IF YOU THINK YOUR GOING TO GET A MACAW AND RIGHT AWAY IT WILL START TO TALK YOU'VE BOUGHT THIS BIRD FOR THE WRONG REASON, THIS TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND A LOT OF REPEATING. SLOWLY BUT SURLY THEY GET THERE. WE'VE ALWAYS BEEN ONES THAT BELIEVE TO LET OTHER'S HANDLE OUR BIRDS SO THAT THE BIRDS DON'T GET MEAN TO PEOPLE. HOWEVER, I HAVE ALWAYS! INSISTED THAT THEIR HANDS BE WASHED BEFORE THEY COULD HANDLE MY BIRDS. AND ALSO BE READY FOR THE PERSON THAT WANTS TO HOLD YOUR BIRD BUT WALKS UP TO IT LIKE IT IS A GIANT HUMAN EATER AND JERKS AWAY FROM THE BIRD, THIS CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS SUCH AS THE BIRD LOOSING IT'S BALANCE TO THE BIRD BITING THE PERSON THAT IS HESITANT. I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH TO YOU THAT YOU GET TO KNOW THE VERY BEING OF YOUR BIRD, STUDY THEM CLOSE WATCH THEIR MOVES COMMUNICATE WITH THEM THIS CAN AND HAS BEEN DONE MANY TIMES. THESE ARE VERY SMART BIRDS.AND AS I SAID BEFORE THEY ARE VERY ACTIVE. WE USE TO HANG UP HUGH ROPES FROM THE CEILING AND RUN THEM UP AND DOWN AND ACROSS THE ROOMS AND OUR BIRDS LOVED THAT. BUT, WE HAD TO ATTACH A PIZZA PAN UP AGAINST THE CEILING AS THE BIRDS ALSO LOVE THE TASTE OF CEILINGS LOL LOL INFACT THEY LOVE TO TAKE ANYTHING APART THUS CAUTION IS VERY NEEDED ESP. AROUND CORDS ETC.THEY DO REQUIRE A VERY LARGE CAGE AND SPECIAL TYPE OF WOODS TO STAND ON AND MINERALS AND VITIMINS AND VERY GOOD FOOD FRESH VEGGIES, TO FRUIT AND THEY LOVE HUMAN FOOD AS WELL BUT THERE ARE SOME THAT THEY MUST NEVER HAVE YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW OF THESE AND NO!!!! BIRDS DO NOT LIVE ON LETTUCE! THEY HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE GREATEST JOYS IN MY LIFE AND OF MY CHILDRENS AND MY FAMILIES LIVES. JUST KNOW THAT YOU ARE TAKING ON A IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITY WHEN OWNING ONE OF THESE. UPKEEP IS SO IMPORTANT FROM BEAKS TO TALLONS TO FEATHERS. I USE TO PREEN MY MACAW AND HE LOVED IT.I'VE ALWAYS KEPT MY BIRD'S WINGS CLIPPED SO THEY COULD NOT GET OUT AND FLY AWAY. I'VE NEVER OWNED A FREE FLYER AND I DO ADVISE AGAINST IT, BUT THEN AGAIN THAT IS YOUR CHOICE. THEY ARE FUN AS FUN GETS BUT ALSO REMEMBER THEY ARE ALSO WORK AND A LOT OF DEDICATION. FOR EXAMPLE THEIR CAGES THEY MUST BE LARGE AND MUST HAVE AT LEAST THREE BOWLS IN THEM THAT MUST BE KEPT CLEAN AT ALL TIMES., AND THEY WILL MAKE A MESS FOR YOU TO CLEAN DAILY TOO BELIEVE ME. MINE WAS MOST DEFF. A LABOR OF LOVE. WHEN I CLEANED THEIR CAGES THEY WOULD SLIDE DOWN THEIR GAGE BARS AND HOP RIGHT ONTO MY SHOULDER OR BACK WHICH EVER WAS CLOSEST AND THEN WANT TO GET RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF MY BUSINESS. YOU MUST BE VERY CAUTIOUS WHEN CLEANING THEIR CAGES OF THE CHEMICALS YOU USE AND TO MAKE SURE THEY DON'T GET INTO THE LIQUID YOUR USING TO CLEAN THE CAGE WITH. THEN IT IS IMPORTANT TO ME ANYWAY TO RINSE IF OFF REAL WELL AFTE CLEANING. ONCE A WEEK I TAKE THE CAGE OUTSIDE WHICH IS NOT REAL EASY BUT, AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK AND HOSE IT DOWN WITH A PRESSURE WASHER AND REALLY GET INTO ALL OF THE GROVES THAT HOST OLD FOOD AND BACTERIA. THIS IS A MUST. I'M NOT TRYING TO MAKE IT ALL SOUND LIKE WORK BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW THESE THINGS RIGHT UP FRONT BEFORE YOU MAKE THAT ALL IMPORTANT DECISION TO ADOPT OR PURCHASE A MACAW. THEY ARE LIKE YOUR CHILDREN AND THEY DO AS YOU DO BELIEVE IT OR NOT, IF YOU'VE GOT SCREEMERS IN YOUR FAMILY YOU WILL HAVE SCREAMING BIRDS, THEY DO EVERYTHING YOU DO AND SAY EVERYTHING YOU SAY SO JUST BE AWARE OF THAT.DEPENDING ON THE AGE OF YOUR BIRD WILL BE THE STEPS OF TRAINNING. A BABY MUST FIRST BE ON THE GROUND AND LEARN TO PEARCH THEN TO " STEP UP" AS I CALL IT. THIS IS TO TEACH HIM/HER TO STEP UP ON YOUR HAND OR ARM, THEY ARE FAST LEARNERS. OR AT LEAST THIS IS THE KIND OF BIRDS I'VE ALWAYS BEEN AROUND. I'VE GOT TO SHARE SOMETHING REAL FUNNY WITH YOU. MY ONE MACAW LOVED CHICKEN!!!! LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT. SO, HE KNEW WHEN MOMMA HAD CHICKEN HE WAS RIGHT THERE IN MY FACE READY FOR HIS SHARE. SO OFTEN TIMES I WOULD COOL DOWN REAL GOOD A CHICKEN LEG FOR HIM AND HE WOULD TAKE IT AND HOLD IT EVER SO TIGHT AND EAT IT AND MY HUSBAND WOULD ALMOST GET SICK HE WOULD SAY OH GOD, ITS LIKE HE IS EATING HIS COUSIN. THAT WOULD GET ME TO LAUGHING SO HARD AND THEN CAW WOULD START LAUGHING WITH ME, IT WAS LIKE A CIRCUS AT MY HOUSE DAY AND NIGHT. CAW ALSO LOVED!!!! SPAGETTI. HE COULD SMELL THE SAUCE COOKING AND WOULD YELL MOMMA MOMMA MOMMA SCET! THIS IS WHAT HE CALLED IT. AND BELIEVE ME I DID NOT SIT DOWN TO EAT UNLESS HE HAD HIS OWN LITTLE PLATE RIGHT ALONG SIDE OF ME. NOW, I KNOW THAT I PROBABLY TAUGHT MY BIRDS SOME NOT SO POLITE THINGS TO DO BUT THIS IS HOW I CHOSE TO RAISE MY BABIES AND THE OLDER ONES AS WELL. ALSO REMEMBER THEY ARE A MEMBER OF YOUR FLOCK! THEY ARE YOUR FAMILY! AND MUST BE TREATED AS SO. THESE BIRDS ARE NOT JUST FOR LOOKS OR TO JUST SHOW OFF THAT YOU HAVE ONE. THEY ARE TRUE FAMILY MEMBERS. CAW WAS FREE TO COME AND GO ALL DAY LONG FROM HIS CAGE TO HIS TOYS TO HIS OTHER STANDS. BUT, AT NIGHT TIME HE ALWAYS GOT PUT AND LOCKED IN HIS CAGE. I SAY LOCKED BECAUSE HE DISCOVERED VERY QUICK HOW TO GET OUT OF HIS CAGE THERE FOR WE HAD TO ADD AN EXTRA LOCK FOR HIS SAKE. THEY ARE EARLY RISERS SO IF YOU ARE ONE TO SLEEP HALF OF YOUR DAY AWAY THIS ISN'T THE BIRD FOR YOU AT ALL. I LOVE TO SHOW YOU THE GOOD ALONG WITH THE SOMETIMES NOT SO GOOD TO PROTECT YOUR BIRD AND TO HELP YOU MAKE A WISE DECISION. BECAUSE ONCE THESE BABIES GET BONDED WITH YOU, IT WOULD BE CRUEL OF YOU TO DISCOVER THAT YOU ARE NOT UP TO ALL OF THE WORK AND JUST GIVE IT TO ANOTHER HOME FOR IT TO GET USE TO., SO, PLEASE IF YOUR WANTING A MACAW OR ANY BIRD PLEASE READ ABOUT THEM, UNDERSTAND THEY ARE! FAMILY, THEY DO REQUIRE A LOT OF ATTENTION, THEY DESERVE THE BEST YOU'VE GOT TO GIVE, THEY ARE NOT CHEAP, THEY MUST GO TO VETS., THEY MUST BE FED GOOD FOOD AND PROPER FOODS., AND YOU DO PUT IN A LOT OF TIME TRAINNING YOUR SPECIAL BABY. MOST OF ALL REMEMBER THEY CAN LIVE UP TO 80 TO 100 YEARS OLD TRY AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT LOVES HIM/HER AND WILL STEP IN TO TAKE OVER IF AND WHEN SOMETHING SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU. PLEASE! KEEP ALL OF THIS IN MIND AND IF YOU STILL THINK YOUR UP FOR THE BIRD, BY ALL MEANS GET YOURSELF ONE AND LOVE IT CRAZY. THANK YOU , AND I HOPE I'VE BEEN OF SOME HELP AND IF YOU EVER FIND A MACAW IN NEED PLEASE PLEASE CONTACT ME, SHERRY 720-933-5144
