Macaws- Not for the feint of heart!

I had two Blue and Gold macaws growing up as a child, and while they were wonderful, amazing and very interesting birds, they were also messy, loud and destructive birds! Macaws require a great deal of care and love, as they tend to have the mentality of a two-year old armed with a super strong beak and toes. The birds were wonderful to people and would happily talk to us and sit on our arms and shoulders, but left unattended they would attempt to escape their environment so they could chew on the various pieces of furniture near them (and one time on the wall itself). However, when kept occupied with toys and treats and a variety of fun snacks, they were wonderful companions and very entertaining to be around. I would recommend these birds only if you have both the experience with handling large birds, and the time and energy to expend on socializing and enriching their environment.
