My family owns two macaws, and they are like night and day. One is very laid back, and she can speak and even 'dance'; the other only likes to be held by my father, has been known to bite, and is very unpredictable, which I find a bit discomforting. I believe that these sorts of birds have their own personalities much like we do, and the best advice I can give you is to get the bird as young as possible (or from someone who has trained theirs), and to handle it very often. Get the animal used to not only family, but others as well. They do not require a lot of upkeep: food and water once a day (they eat throughout the day, not in one sitting), and cleaning their cage a few times a week. Their habitat takes up a good bit of space, so be aware of this as well.
