I've flown birds all my life. When I was 8 years old my father got me into falconry by buying me a Barn Owl. I had it from a chick and it imprinted upon me in a very short amount of time. Having flown and trained many birds throughout my life, I highly recommend getting a Barn Owl as your first raptor.
They are easy to train, easy to maintain, and they give you an insight into how much time and energy is consumed in looking after these creatures. They are beautiful, elegant and majestic. They also make a lot of mess and don’t make the most attractive noises.
They train very easily and once trained don't require a lot of retraining if they've been in the aviary for a while. If you're looking to get into falconry then this is a good bird to start with to understand the basic needs of a raptor and how to give basic care.
