As my son grew into his teens he became passionate about magic, which lead us to purchase two white doves for his act, which I have now learned are called ringneck doves. These doves were very domesticated, enjoyed being out of their cage and handled. They learned tricks and routines and were very smart. They were also his alarm on days he overslept, for the sunlight woke them up and started their cooing and eating cycles.
The saddest part about these birds was when one of them died. The other one was filled with sorrow, did not want to play or perform, and was just miserable. I would anticipate that they had formed a bond and upon losing one, that bond was broken and the others heart broke with it. These are a great pet, though, especially if you want a bird that you can handle and that will play with you and learn tricks.
