If you are looking for a unique and exciting pet then consider owning an African ring-necked Parakeet. I adore my female, Gigi who brings so much color and pizazz to my home and I know that my life would not be the same without her! Although Indian Ring-necked Parakeets tend to be more popular, African Ring-necks are less aggressive and have more personality, as long as you buy them from birth, that is. They adore being out their cages and and exploring the house - mine chills on my shoulder while I'm cooking! While they enjoy hanging out close to their humans, they don't like being petted and have been known to give you a "friendly nip" just to warn you not to get too close when you stroke them. The males are more gifted at talking than the females (I'm sorry to say!) and they can pick up quite a vocabulary as long as you start teaching them from a young age. I would highly recommend the African Ring-necked Parakeet as a pet, but not so much if you have small children around the house.
