Glucosamine is a natural substance found in and around the cells of cartilage (the tough, elastic, fibrous connective tissue found in various parts of the body, such as the joints).
Glucosamine is a form of amino sugar that is believed to inhibit inflammation and stimulate cartilage cell growth. It is believed that as humans (and animals) age, our bodies produce less glucosamine. This is one reason that joint cartilage tends to weaken and break down – especially in the weight bearing joints like the hips and knees – limiting movement and causing pain by allowing bone to scrape on bone.
Glucosamine supplements for horses come in powders and liquids.
