Counterconditioning (also known as "stimulus substitution") is a training technique which involves changing an animal's fearful or aggressive response to a situation to a positive and pleasant response.
Counterconditioning is a type of classical conditioning training (learning through association), and usually involves food as a reward.
For help with counterconditioning, it is recommended that a pet owner find a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB or ACAAB) or a board-certified veterinary behaviorist (Dip ACVB).
