In the 1970's an American psychologist named Roger Callahan developed an energy healing system called Thought Field Training (TFT). TFT involved tapping the body's 365 acupressure points to aid restoration of the body's energy flow. This technique was revised by a Californian engineer and minister named Gary Craig, who focused on 11 of these acupressure points and renamed the system - Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).

EFT practitioners describe their therapy as an 'emotional form of acupuncture'. The practitioner taps their fingertips on acupuncture meridian points on the client's head and chest, while the client is focused on a specific emotional / physical problem. The theory is that tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmation works to clear the emotional block that is restricting the electromagnetic energy that flows through the body and which regulates health.

According to EFT, it usually takes one or two rounds of applying EFT to a specific emotional / physical problem in order for its emotional intensity, and health impacts, to vanish forever. EFT is said to aid many conditions, including anxiety, addictions, depression, weight problems and pain. The technique can be self administered after a period of study.
