A hydrosol or hydrolate is the pure, distillate water that is left over after essential oils are steam distilled from the original plant material. The term is derived from the Latin words hydro and sol, meaning "water solution." Upon steam distillation, many of the water-soluble plant compounds that may not be present in the essential oils and some of the oil-soluble compounds (essential oils) end up in the distillation water that is hydrosol.
Hydrosols are available in a wide variety of fragrances.
