The spotted salamander was a summer pet in our home. They were given to us by a friend. We kept them in gallon-size buckets in the garage, filled with a little dirt and water. I believe we fed them insects.
They were relatively easy pets to have: stayed outside, didn't track in dirt, no clean up. However, when winter came, the salamanders became less and less active, and eventually died, despite our efforts to make them comfortable.
The salamanders were fun for small children (4yrs+) who liked to hold the squirmy creature, but were gentle enough not to squeeze. When not holding the salamander, they were fun to just watch move around and over and under each other in their buckets. They were a delight for children and easy on parents.
