As kids we used to catch them...

We used to live next to a swampy marsh area so there were salamanders all over the place. We were allowed to catch and keep them for a day or two then we would have to turn them loose. Salamanders like dark, cool, wet places and spend most of their time hiding. Like most small creatures they can be pretty fragile. They aren't really suited as pets, especially for kids. I would think if someone were to keep a salamander long term they would have to do research on how to properly care for them. Also remembering that ones born in the wild may have significant differences in their than captive born ones. Most amphibians and reptiles require a lot of care to keep them from perishing.
