Fire Belly Newt

By

Portland, Oregon, United States

My first official amphibian pet was a fire belly newt that I received for my 18th birthday. That newt went everywhere with me including college.

This species makes a great pet and is easy to keep in captivity. As with all amphibians moisture/humidity are key to a healthy pet. This salamander is easy to handle and seems to be a little more active than other salamander pets. I taught mine to eat wax worms from my hand. They're a good beginners pet for amphibian lovers.

They are however, hard to come by in a lot of states. Some states have outlawed them (and most other salamander pets) because they could become established if released into the wild. We can't have them here in Oregon unfortunately.
