I have owned several Eastern newts throughout my life. They are always very entertaining, and it's fun to watch them swim around in their little pond. I would often race Joe against his buddy Bob on our homemade newt race course. Joe always won. :)
My newts were fairly easy to care for. I had them in a small plastic tank. I did not have any fancy filters or waterfalls for them. They did not need any special lighting or heat source. The feeding was easy. They did eat some live mealworms here and there, so they may not be the best pet for a squeamish person. The most important part was to remember to take out any extra food that they did not get eaten right away, otherwise the water would get yucky fast! I'm sure this would not have been the case if I had installed a filter. A water change every 3-5 days or so usually did the trick.
Overall, I think newts make a great pets. They are not very labor intensive, fairly inexpensive, and would make an especially great "starter" pet for a young child.
