I kept newts when I was a kid. The Eastern Newt is a nice choice but not as readily available as the Fire-bellied species. I was younger but my father helped me with the setup and care. You should know that newts are escape artists and if they get out they will dry up and die. I learned the hard way. I felt horrible and made sure to secure all holes in the hood. Even the tiniest air line tube hole could allow for escape. But they are cool little guys and feeding is easy as they will eat frozen or freeze dried blood worms and brine shrimp. Good water quality is key to prevent disease and skin problems.
