I kept a newt in my garden pond. It was an odd little creature, cool to watch even though it did very little. On a few occasions it crept out of the pond and went for a nearby wander on the lawn but always found its way back to the safety of the water. This is not the type of creature that likes or should be over-handled. It is best just to observe it and let it do its thing so not really for younger kids.
