I bought an entire set-up on Craigslist. It came with a 20g tank, a fountain/filter, plants, and 5 newts.

GOOD:
- Easy to care for.
- Nice to look at.
- They stay small, so you don't have to worry about them outgrowing their habitat.

NOT SO GOOD:
- Not much, really. There is minimal maintenance and feeding. That's about it.

OVERALL:
Newts are great for beginners to start learning about keeping pets. They require little maintenance and expense. And it is easy to sell the set-up if you choose to. I never grew attached to the newts, even as a kid. I eventually sold the set-up.
