I have had a few axolotls in different colours. At the moment I have a plain black one and a black and yellow spotty one. They are such interesting creatures, very easy to keep and quite fascinating to watch. They're great if you want something different and a talking point for when people visit. They are easy to keep, all they need is a tank. Mine eat bloodworm, which I buy frozen, and live river shrimp as a treat. It is fun to watch them swim around and try to catch the shrimp. They are easy to clean. Their tanks do not really get all that dirty. We just do a water change every week (taking about half of the water out of the tank and putting fresh water in). The only big problem I have had with them, is their cannibalism! I have had to separate my two into separate tanks because one has had one of its legs and part of its tail bitten off by the other one. This is supposed to not be a problem once they get a bit older but this is the second time it has happened to us, after them living happily together for some time too! Although I hate the fact that my axolotl has been maimed, It is exceedingly interesting to watch the missing limbs grow back as good as new over a few months. They really are magical creatures! I would definitely recommend them as pets because they are so easy to keep and don't require much time or money to maintain. They have different personalities which is fun. One of ours comes up to the side of the tank and follows your finger around. They also take food from our hands. I like their combination of being easy to keep yet also being quite interactive. They make the perfect pets for children.
