Manuel the walking fish

I got Manuel when I was 12. He was beautiful, dark smoky grey, with a deep purple ruffle round his neck. He didn't have much of a personality, but hey, he's a fish. He was as easy to care for as any freshwater fish, and much more interesting. I lived in the country, and thus was able to actually go and catch food for him. I would take my goldfish net down to the creek, and trawl the little lagoons that form after it rains. I used to catch an amazing variety of little beetles, larva and grubs - and Manuel ate the lot. Nothing ever fazed him. He especially liked mosquito larva, which were never hard to come by. I even fed him earth worms. About the only time Manuel got excited was when I fed him - he would swim/run from end to end in the tank, and a couple of times he got so fast he actually leaped out of the tank on to the floor. And you know - I was just thinking, he never leaped out of the side of the tank that was against the wall, so that proves he knew what he was doing all along. Moral of the story : never underestimate your walking fish.
