I owned an American Tree Frog (I think) when I was a kid as my first pet. I am unsure if that is the actual breed it was but I don't think it matters too much.
Let's just say this, I LOVED my frog, it was easy to feed, keep, and slightly entertaining. I mostly loved it because it was my first pet, and I thought its cage was cool.
When I have children of my own, if they want a small little pet, we'll start out with a frog. It is the perfect first step is seeing if they are able to handle the responsibility because they require very little care other than regular feeding. Then if they care for the frog without killing it within a few months we'll upgrade to a hamster.
