From Tadpole to frog

We had aquired some tadpoles and they turned out to be some amazing American bullfrogs. The frogs got to about 4 inches from nose to rear, but they managed to escape. We found more at the pet store, and they escaped just after growing to a particular size. For now I'm not sure what I did wrong. The enclosure has wire heavy gauge mesh top with rim, and heat sources are above and below the tank. Water source is twice as deep as the frog at all times. These are more of an advanced pet since they are so hard to keep a hold of.
